You may need to change the saved Wi-Fi connection after a new router is installed, after moving home, or after a Wi-Fi password changes. This is different from diagnosing a slow connection: the goal here is simply to remove the old saved network and join the correct new one.

Before you start

Check that the new router is fully online using another device in your home. If possible, keep the Fire TV device within normal Wi-Fi range while changing networks. You will need the precise Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password; passwords are case-sensitive.

For privacy, enter the password directly with the remote and do not share it in a chat message or support request. If the new router uses the same network name and password as the old one, Fire TV may reconnect on its own. If it does not, use the steps below.

Forget the old Wi-Fi network

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Highlight the saved Wi-Fi network you no longer want to use.
  4. Press the Menu button on the remote.
  5. Choose Select / OK to forget the network.

Join the new network

  1. Stay in Settings > Network.
  2. Select the new Wi-Fi network from the available list.
  3. Enter the current Wi-Fi password.
  4. Wait for the device to confirm that it is connected.

If several names look similar, verify the network name on the router label or with the person who manages the connection. Do not select an unfamiliar open network just because it appears first in the list.

If the new Wi-Fi network is not listed

First, return to the Network screen and refresh the list. Amazon also recommends switching Wi-Fi off and back on from the Network area before trying again. Check that the router is powered on and that other devices can see the network.

If the list still does not show the network, restart the Fire TV device normally: unplug its power source, wait briefly, then reconnect it. You can also restart the modem and router, giving each device time to come back online before testing again.

If the password is rejected

Re-enter it slowly, paying attention to capital letters, symbols and numbers. A Wi-Fi password change can leave older devices trying a saved, outdated credential, which is why forgetting the old network first is useful.

If the password works on another device but not on Fire TV, restart the Fire TV and router, then try the connection again. If your router has separate network names for different frequency bands, select the name your home network administrator recommends for that device.

Check the connection after you join

Once the new network is selected, Fire TV’s Network Status tool can help distinguish between a link to the router and a link from the router to the internet. Amazon says you can reach the tool through Settings > Network; on compatible devices, pressing Play/Pause opens diagnostic information.
