A quiet scene followed by a loud effect can make you reach for the volume control. Apple TV 4K includes a setting that narrows that difference, giving loud music and effects a more even relationship to the rest of the audio.

Use it during playback

  1. Show the playback controls. Start while video or audio is already playing.
  2. Open Audio Options. The available controls appear in a pop-up menu.
  3. Choose Reduce Loud Sounds. Close the menu with the Back or Menu button when you are finished.

Apple notes that the controls you see can depend on the current media, your speakers or headphones, and the Apple TV model. A missing option is not automatically a fault with the device.

Set it as the default preference

Open Settings > Video and Audio, then turn on Reduce Loud Sounds. Apple describes the result as lowering the overall sound level by reducing dynamic range. In everyday terms, the loudest parts become less dominant compared with quieter parts.

This is useful when other people are sleeping, when you share a wall, or when frequent volume changes are uncomfortable. It does not add a new audio track or change which language is playing.

What to expect after turning it on

  • Explosions, music peaks and other loud effects should feel less sudden.
  • The overall mix may sound more compact because the difference between quiet and loud moments is reduced.
  • Your television, receiver or soundbar volume remains a separate control.
  • The exact result can vary with the source audio and the connected equipment.

Do not change the audio format just to reduce loudness

Reduce Loud Sounds is separate from the Audio Format setting. Apple recommends leaving Audio Format on Auto in normal use so Apple TV can choose the best supported output. Format conversion is intended for compatibility with equipment that cannot handle the default format, not as the first fix for sudden volume differences.

If the setting is missing

  1. Confirm that you are using an Apple TV 4K and review the current Video and Audio menu.
  2. Check Audio Options while media is actively playing.
  3. Try another item to see whether the available playback controls change.
  4. If menus are unresponsive, use the normal steps to restart Apple TV without erasing it.

Common questions

Does Reduce Loud Sounds mute loud scenes?

No. It reduces dynamic range; it does not mute the programme or replace the main volume control.

Is this the same as audio descriptions?
